The past century has seen a golden age of discoveries about the universe, from the existence of trillions of galaxies beyond our Milky Way to the confirmation that the universe has been expanding for almost 14 billion years. Scientists can now specify the exact sequence of events unfolding over the tiniest fraction of a second after the Big Bang and extending forward billions of years. Taught by award-winning educator and cosmologist Gary Felder, Professor of Physics at Smith College, The Big Bang and Beyond covers the current state of knowledge in cosmology in 12 lectures, relying on minimal mathematics and maximum ingenuity with explanations and graphics.

Professor Felder spends the first part of the course covering well-established concepts about the early universe, including cosmic inflation, the appearance of fundamental forces, the formation of nuclei and then later atoms, the cosmic microwave background, and the accretion of the first stars and galaxies. In the second part of the course, he focuses on more open questions and conjectural theories, many of which seem straight out of science fiction, such as the proposed existence of other universes, extra spatial dimensions, and continuously erupting Big Bangs.
