The Pagan World: Ancient Religions before Christianity
Overview
Course No. 2852
In The Pagan World: Ancient Religions before Christianity, explore the ancient polytheistic peoples of the Mediterranean and beyond, their many gods and goddesses, and their public and private worship practices. Professor Hans-Friedrich Mueller brings this ancient world to life in 24 lectures filled with captivating stories, artifacts, illustrations, and detailed descriptions from primary sources.
In this ancient Mediterranean region, religion was not separate from daily life; rather, it encompassed all aspects of existence. The diverse gods were believed to inhabit every part of life, prompting the ancient peoples to engage in a strict contract with their deities: care for the gods would ensure their care in return. This led to the construction of extraordinary temples, the offering of food and wine, and numerous rituals that governed every aspect of existence.
This course utilizes textual and archaeological evidence to explore the religious cultures from the earliest human religious practices in prehistoric times to the conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity in the 4th century CE.
